Constellation Reading Challenge

Welcome, stargazers and explorers, to our Celestial Constellation Reading Challenge! Embark on a cosmic journey through the pages of literature as we traverse the vast expanse of the literary universe. Each constellation represents a different genre or theme, guiding you on an adventure of discovery and imagination. From the epic quests of Orion to the enchanting realms of Cassiopeia, let the stars be your guide as you explore new worlds and uncover hidden treasures within the pages of your favorite books. Join us as we reach for the stars and ignite our imaginations together in the pursuit of knowledge and wonder.

Find the book lists for each constellation under the Reading Lists section of ReadSquared!

The goal is to read one book from each of the seven constellation booklists provided. For each book read from a different booklist, you can earn 50 points. Read as many as you can before the summer ends! You will earn 100 bonus points if you manage to read a book from all seven of the lists!

Random Acts of Kindness

Small gestures make the most difference on a daily basis. It's easy to get so preoccupied with our own lives that we forget about others, but with just one simple act of kindness, we can change the way someone else's day goes, and we can better ourselves and the world in the process. This challenge is designed for you to take the time to do something for someone else — and hopefully they will pay it forward to the next person!

Diversify Your Reading

This challenge is all about expanding your reading horizons and exploring literature from diverse voices and perspectives. To participate, we encourage you to read books from authors with different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences than your own. Whether it's books by authors from marginalized communities, books in translation, or books with protagonists who represent diverse identities, this challenge is designed to help you broaden your understanding of the world and the people in it.

Check off at least 5 of the below activities to complete this mission. If you can, try to make sure the book(s) are #ownvoices, meaning that the author and the character share the same identity. For example, if a Deaf author wrote about a Deaf main character, it would be #ownvoices.

A single book can check off more than one box. You do not need to have completed the book to check off activities. As long as you have started reading a book that meets one of the requirements during the Summer Reading Challenge, you can check it off.

Cabinet of Curiosities

Create Your Own Cabinet of Curiosities!

Design a cabinet of curiosities with items that spark your imagination and curiosity. What will you put in your Cabinet of Curiosities? Bubbling potions or creepy critters? Magic spell books or cursed artifacts?

As you design your cabinet of curiosities, consider including a mix of items that represent different time periods, cultures, and interests. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  1. A unique piece of jewelry or accessory with an interesting backstory
  2. A vintage or antique toy or game
  3. A preserved insect or animal specimen, such as a butterfly or seashell
  4. A piece of art from a local or lesser-known artist
  5. A musical instrument from a different culture or time period
  6. A rare or unusual book with a unique cover design or historical significance
  7. A mysterious (possibly magical) object with an unknown origin or purpose, sparking curiosity and imagination
  8. A piece of clothing or fashion accessory with a unique history or cultural significance

Once you've selected the items for your cabinet of curiosities, create a visual representation of your cabinet design. This could be a drawing, a digital design, or a 3D model. You can use the template below to help get you started. You could also write a description of each item and why you chose to include it in your cabinet.

Use this template to fill the shelves of your cabinet:

Book-Face Challenge

Get creative and have some fun with books. Create your own book-face photo and share it with us to earn points! Click here for examples. If you don't want to share your face, you can do a book-hand photo, or a book-back-of-your-head photo! Be creative!

To participate, choose a book with an interesting face on the cover and hold it up to your face. The challenge is to make the cover of the book blend seamlessly with your face and create a fun image. You can use different props or accessories to enhance your photo and make it even more interesting. Take a photo and share it with us!

Need help finding the perfect book cover? Come to the library and an OPL staff member can help you! There will also be a Book-face station at the Jess Hann, Delpark, and McLaughlin branches from June 17-30 to help you find the perfect book.

Feel free to share on the Teen Discord Server!

Book Spine Poetry

For this challenge, we invite you to create a poem using only the titles of books. Choose a stack of books (from the library or at home) and arrange them so that the titles on the spines create a poem. Once you've created your book spine poem, share it with us to earn points! You can submit an image of your Book Spine Poem, or write it out for us by filling in the text option activity. And feel free to share on the Teen Discord Server!

So, gather your books and get started on this fun and creative challenge. We can't wait to see what kind of poetry you come up with! Click here for examples!

Re-Cover It!

In this challenge, put your design skills to the test and create a new cover for a book of your choice.

To get started, choose a book that you feel could benefit from a fresh and updated cover design. This could be a classic book or a modern bestseller, a fiction or non-fiction book, anything that sparks your creativity.

Next, consider the themes, characters, and setting of the book. What kind of imagery could you use to convey the essence of the story? What colors and fonts could you use to make the cover stand out and attract readers?

Once you have some ideas, it's time to start designing! You can use any design software or tools you prefer, or even sketch out your design by hand. Be sure to incorporate the title and author of the book in your design, and consider adding some teaser text or quotes to entice potential readers.

Need help finding covers that could use a make-over? Come into the library and a staff member will be happy to help you! There will also be a station set up at the Jess Hann, Delpark, and McLaughlin branches during the month of August to help inspire your creativity.

When your design is complete, share it below to earn points! And don't forget to share your new cover design on the Teen Discord Server!

Design your own Tarot card!

From Brittanica.com, a Tarot deck is "a set of cards used in tarot games and in fortune-telling. Tarot decks were invented in Italy in the 1430s... Each [card] bore a different allegorical illustration instead of a common suitmark... The adaptation of tarots to occult and fortune-telling purposes first occurred in France about 1780. For fortune-telling each tarot card is ascribed a meaning."

Use the template below (or create your own) to design you own Tarot card. You can use the typical Tarot motifs (ex: The Magician, The Emperor, etc.) or create something entirely unique. Submit an image of your card below to earn points.
